Livingston County Anti-Slavery Society Minutes presented by Dr. Justin Behrend

March 24th | 1:30pm

The LCHS collection holds the original minutes of the Livingston County Anti-Slavery Society 1837-1839. Dr. Justin Behrend, SUNY Geneseo professor, will present about the contents of these Minutes which lists membership name of approximately 125 men and women who were activists who helped to promote the radical (for its time) idea that slavery should be abolished in the United States. This presentation coincides with the opening of the new exhibit focusing on the Anti-Slavery Society Minutes. The exhibit features an introductory video as well as an interactive digital component that shows scans of the pages in the Minutes through which visitors can scroll and features a legible transcription beside each scan. The exhibit will also include images and text on the surrounding walls.

You Live on Stolen Land: Indigenous Land Rights in Western, NY

VENUE LOCATION CHANGED TO DOTY RECITAL HALL ON THE SUNY GENESEO CAMPUS.

SUNY Geneseo historian, Dr. Michael L. Oberg, will talk about Indigenous dispossession in western New York and the Senecas' remaining legitimate claims to the land.

 

Dixon Hollow History: Life in the Hollow

Dr. Kristi Krumrine, SUNY Geneseo Anthropology Professor, presents the results of archaeological and historic research conducted at the Dixon Hollow Site, in. Hemlock, New York. Learn about the families and the lives of those who lived in this small hamlet before Hemlock Lake became the water source for the city of Rochester. Families were forced to relocate, leaving behind a lost, and now not forgotten, town of Dixon Hollow.
